Szydlowski scores a pair as Erie cruises to 6-1 win over Plymouth @NHLdotcom

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Shawn Szydlowski scored twice and added an assist as the Erie Otters spoiled the Plymouth Whalers' 2008-09 home-opener, winning 6-1 Saturday evening in Ontario Hockey League action.

Anthony Luciani added two third-period goals - both on penalty shots against Whalers underage goalie Scott Wedgewood, who relieved starting netminder Matt Hackett after two periods. Luciani also chipped in with an assist.

Both Szydlowski, from nearby St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Luciani had chances to complete their hat tricks in the last minute of the game on two-on-one breaks but were denied by Wedgewood.

Ryan O'Reilly had a goal and two assists for Erie (1-1-0-0), with overager Brandon Biggers netting a single.

Goalie Jaroslav Janus earned the win stopping 36 shots.

Joe Gaynor had the lone Plymouth goal early in the second, briefly tying the game 1-1 before O'Reilly gave the Otters a lead they wouldn't relinquish, snapping a shot over Hackett's stick-side shoulder. Biggers buried a slap shot just inside the far side post from the left wing face-off dot past Hackett just 28 seconds later, breaking open a close game.

Hackett and Wedgewood combined for 35 saves.
