Blog 6 - Friday, April 23
I was lucky enough to go to the game last night at MSG. Of course I was disappointed at the outcome. Except for the first period, I was happy with the Caps performance. Lundqvist was a WALL. Look at the difference in shots on goal between the teams - Caps: 39, Rangers: 19!
Even if we had won, Sean Avery
's threat on Ovechkin's throat with the blade of his hockey stick would still absolutely disgust me. As the sellout crowd freaked out with happiness at the final buzzer, I thought "C'mon Avery. Is this how your parents raised you?"
Jimmy Fallon and his wife, Nancy Juvonen (Drew Barrymore's producing Partner at Flower Films) were both wearing Avery jerseys. Really Jimmy? This is your favorite player? This is who you see in yourself? The face of the Rangers? You couldn't wear Gomez or Naslund or Drury? Jimmy was getting mobbed by fans during periods, getting his picture taken. They were all wearing Avery jerseys. This is the guy you wanted back so desperately? This is how New York wants to represent itself?
The Rangers on one end have some world-class talent and individuals. Drury, the Captain, has been a leader on and off the ice for decades now. Lundqvist stopped shot after shot and is arguably the only reason the Rangers are winning the series. How many penalties has Avery taken to put his team in danger, not to mention ours?
New York has a king and Lundqvist is his name. Every Rangers fan should bow down to him. They also have a jester. His name is Avery. He will cost the Rangers a Stanley Cup Final if he doesn't cost the Rangers this series.
It is obvious what the Caps need to do. They need to take it one step, one shift at a time and crawl out of a very deep hole. They are on the Hillary Step on the way to Everest. It's pitch black and freezing. They are out of oxygen and have snow-blindness. They haven't slept in 24 hours and all they can do is take it step by step. The statistics are not in their favor in terms of being down 3-1. On the other hand, I feel they will beat the Rangers and Lundqvist soon as neither he nor his team can make up for all of Avery's stupid and blatantly horrid penalties.
I think if the Caps are down late in the game, there will be a brawl and fines will have to be paid. Avery will be the fuse to the powder keg but by the looks of the way his teammates interact with him on the bench, I don't know if the Rangers will come to his aid.
No matter what happens in Game 5, I know that I am proud to be a Caps Fan. WE HAVE OVECHKIN. HE IS ALL CLASS AND I'M PROUD HE IS A CAPITAL. THANK YOU TED AND THANK YOU OVIE FOR BEING IN WASHINGTON.
Go Caps! We have faith.
