Storm beat Plymouth 5-3, take 2-0 series lead over Whalers in OHL playoffs

GUELPH, Ont. - Garret Sparks made 22 saves as the Guelph Storm beat the Plymouth Whalers 5-3 in Ontario Hockey League playoff action Sunday.

The Storm, ranked seventh in the Western Conference, lead the best-of-seven series over the No. 2 Whalers 2-0. Game 3 is Tuesday in Plymouth, Mich.

Scott Kosmachuk, Jason Dickinson, Francis Menard and Tanner Richard each had a goal and an assist for Guelph. Cody McNaughton also scored.

Stefan Noesen had two goals for Plymouth, while Rickard Rakell also scored. Scott Wedgewood stopped 28 of 32 shots for Plymouth. Matt Mahalak, who played the last 1:37 of the first period, stopped the only shot he faced.

Guelph stormed out to a 3-0 first-period lead, with Mahalak coming in after Dickinson's goal made it 3-0.

Wedgewood came back to start the second period, and his team responded with a pair of goals to gut Gueph's lead to 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Noesen scored a power-play goal to tie the game at 5:03 of the third period, but Menard scored the winner just over five minutes later.

Richard capped the scoring with an empty-net goal.
