Stinziani scores hat trick as Cape Breton beats Halifax 6-4 in QMJHL opener @NHLdotcom

Cape Breton forward Michael Stinziani scored his first hat trick in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as the Screaming Eagles beat the Halifax Mooseheads 6-4 in their regular-season opener Friday.

Stinziani, who had 17 goals and 25 assists with Cape Breton last season, scored twice in the second period before adding an empty-netter with 20 seconds left in the third.

Logan Shaw, Maximilien Le Sieur and Taylor MacDougall also scored for the Screaming Eagles (1-0-0) while defenceman Morgan Ellis added three assists.

Konrad Abeltshauser, Jessyko Bernard, Alex Lemieux and Yuri Cheremetiev scored singles for Halifax (0-1-0).

In other QMJHL play it was: P.E.I. 2, Moncton 1; Victoriaville 3, Rouyn-Noranda 2; Gatineau 4, Baie-Comeau 1; Lewiston 2, Chicoutimi 1; Shawinigan 5, Montreal 4; Rimouski 4, Quebec 3; and Saint John 4, Acadie-Bathurst 3.

At Sydney, N.S., Christopher Holden stopped 32 shots in net for Cape Breton, while at the other end Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault made 27 saves.

Rocket 2, Wildcats 1

At Charlottetown, Evan Mosher made 20 saves as the Rocket beat Moncton in their regular-season opener.

Ben Duffy and Jordon Southorn scored in the second period for P.E.I. (1-0-0), while Allain Saulnier added one for Moncton (0-1-0) in the first.


Tigres 3, Huskies 2

At Victoriaville, Que., Brandon Hynes scored twice and Maxim Lamarche added one more as the Tigres (1-0-0) kicked off the regular season with a win over Rouyn-Noranda.

Ben Miller and Zach O'Brien scored for the Huskies (0-1-0).


Olympiques 4, Drakkar 1

At Baie-Comeau, Que., Christian Ouellet-Martel scored twice as Gatineau cruised past the Drakkar.

Tye McGinn and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for the Olympiques (1-0-0), while Marc-Olivier Mimar added one for Baie-Comeau (0-1-0).


Maineiacs 2, Sagueneens 1 (SO)

At Chicoutimi, Que., Alexander Beaton scored the shootout winner as the Maineiacs edged the Sagueneens.

Billy Lacasse scored in the first period for Lewiston (1-0-0) while Michal Hlinka also scored in the first for Chicoutimi (0-0-1).


Cataractes 5, Junior 4

At Shawinigan, Que., the Cataractes scored twice late in the third to rally against Montreal in their home opener.

Anthony Brockman, Ryan Lagace, Tommy Tremblay, Pierrick Martel and Christophe Tremblay each scored for the Cataractes (1-0-0).

Jeremy Gouchie, Trevor Parkes, Evgeny Solomonov and Pier-Antoine Dion scored for the Junior (0-1-0).


Oceanic 4, Remparts 3 (OT)

At Rimouski, Que., Emmanuel Boudreau scored the overtime winner as the Oceanic beat Quebec.

Felix Lefrancois scored twice for Rimouski (1-0-0) while Charles-Antoine Roy added a single.

Dominic Savoie had two and Jeremie Vigneault-Belanger scored one for the Remparts (0-0-1).


Sea Dogs 4, Titan 3 (SO)

At Bathurst, N.B., Jonathan Huberdeau won it for Saint John in the shootout after the Sea Dogs rallied from a two-goal deficit against the Titan in the third period.

Huberdeau made it 3-3 for Saint John (1-0-0) while Alexandre Leduc and Stanislav Galiev added one each.

Jonathan Lessard scored twice for Acadie-Bathurst (0-0-1) while Julien Tremblay had one goal.
