Center could have become free agent on Friday @NHLdotcom

Steven Stamkos is expected to sign an eight-year contract with an average annual value of $8.5 million to remain with the Tampa Bay Lightning, TSN reported Wednesday.

Stamkos can become an unrestricted free agent Friday but reportedly will stay with the organization that selected him with the first pick of the 2008 NHL Draft.

He had 36 goals and 64 points in 77 games this season. In eight seasons with the Lightning, he has 312 goals and 562 points in 569 games, including an NHL career-high 60 goals in 2011-12, when he won the Rocket Richard Trophy for the second time.

Stamkos has been Lightning captain since March 6, 2014.
