Stephens' hat trick leads Moncton to opening-night 8-2 rout of P.E.I. @NHL

A light-scoring forward from the Yukon led the Moncton Wildcats to a season-opening blowout.

Ted Stephens scored three goals and added an assist as the Wildcats pummelled the P.E.I. Rocket 8-2 Friday night in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League regular-season opener for both teams.

Stephens, a second-year centre from Whitehorse, scored twice in Moncton's four-goal first period and completed the hat trick midway through the second period. The three-goal outburst helped Stephens exceed his goal total for all of last season - he had just two goals and three assists in 42 games for Moncton in 2007-08.

Scott Brannon added a pair of first-period goals for the Wildcats (1-0-0-0), who ended last season by losing their last eight games.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL on Friday, it was: Cape Breton 4 Halifax 3; Quebec 5 Montreal 1; Saint John 3 Acadie-Bathurst 2 (OT); Drummondville 6 Chicoutimi 3; Lewiston 6 Baie-Comeau 5 (OT); and Rimouski 3 Rouyn-Noranda 2.

At Moncton, Sasha Famin, Matt Brown and Devon MacAusland added singles in the Wildcats victory.

Ben Duffy scored twice in a 1:47 span early in the second period to provide the lone offence for the Rocket (0-1-0-0).

Nicola Riopel earned the win with a 24-save performance for Moncton.

Bobby Nadeau was pulled from the P.E.I. net midway through the second period after allowing six goals. He and backup Evan Mosher combined to stop 34 shots.

Screaming Eagles 4 Mooseheads 3

At Sydney, N.S., Vincent Lavigueur scored twice, including the game winner early in the third period, as the Screaming Eagles held on to beat Halifax.

Robert Slaney and Artem Demkov added singles for Cape Breton (1-0-0-0)

Yuri Cheremetiev, Charles Bety and Gerrad Grant countered with goals for the Mooseheads (0-1-0-0).

Remparts 5 Junior 1

At Quebec, Benjamin Breault scored twice and added an assist as the Remparts spoiled Montreal's return to the QMJHL.

Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, Frederick Roy and Samuel Carrier also had goals for the Remparts (1-0-0-0).

Nick Layton replied for the Junior (0-1-0-0), playing their first game since relocating from St. John's, N.L., in the off-season.

Sea Dogs 3 Titan 2 (OT)

At Bathurst, N.S., Keven Guerette-Charland scored the game winner 1:28 into overtime as Saint John rallied to beat the Titan.

Michael Kirkpatrick's goal with 34 seconds left in regulation forced overtime for the Sea Dogs (1-0-0-0), while Andrew Howes had the other Saint John goal.

Spencer Jezegou had both goals for Acadie-Bathurst (0-0-1-0).

Voltigeurs 6 Sagueneens 3

At Chicoutimi, Que., Samson Mahbod's hat trick propelled Drummondville to a win over the Sagueneens.

Mike Hoffman scored twice while Dmitry Kulikov added a single for the Voltigeurs (1-0-0-0), who outshot Chicoutimi 52-11.

Christopher Guay, Jacob Lagace and Dominic Jalbert answered for the Sagueneens (0-1-0-0).

Maineiacs 6 Drakkar 5 (OT)

At Baie-Comeau, Que, Billy Lacasse's goal 1:04 into overtime gave Lewiston a wild victory over the Drakkar.

Marc Bourgeois and Lucas LaBelle each had a pair of third-period goals while Alexander Beaton scored in the first minute of the game for Lewiston (1-0-0-0).

Gabriel Bourque, Guillaume Goulet, Pierre-Luc Lessard, Marc-Andre Laroche and Stephane Michaud responded in defeat for Baie-Comeau (0-1-0-0).

Oceanic 3 Huskies 2

At Rouyn-Noranda, Que., Sebastien Piche's goal midway through the third period stood as the game winner in Rimouski's victory over the Huskies.

Frederic Desrochers and Mathieu Asselin also scored for the Oceanic (1-0-0-0).

Benoit Gervais and Pier-Luc Giguere had goals for Rouyn-Noranda (0-1-0-0).
