Stastny, Comrie and Mason named NHL's 'Three Stars'

NEW YORKColorado Avalanche center Paul Stastny, New York Islanders center Mike Comrie and Nashville Predators goaltender Chris Mason have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending October 7.
   
FIRST STAR – PAUL STASTNY, C, COLORADO AVALANCHE Stastny highlights

The 21-year-old Stastny led all scorers for the week with four goals, four assists and eight points as the Avalanche posted two wins in three starts. In the season opener in Denver Oct. 3 Stastny recorded a hat trick as the Avalanche defeated the Dallas Stars, 4-3. The next night in Nashville, Stasny was held off the scoresheet as the Predators shut out Colorado, 4-0. Stastny finished the week by recording one goal and four assists in a 6-2 win over the San Jose Sharks. Stastny was the runner-up to Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin for the Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year last season.

SECOND STAR – MIKE COMRIE, C, NEW YORK ISLANDERS Comrie highlights

Comrie finished the week with four goals, two assists and six points as the Islanders posted consecutive victories over the defending Presidents’ Trophy winners, the Buffalo Sabres. In Buffalo Oct. 5, Comrie tallied two goals, including the winner, and two assists as the Islanders defeated the Sabres, 6-4. The next night on Long Island, Comrie recorded two goals, including the winner, in a 3-2 triumph. Comrie, 27 years old and in his eighth NHL season, signed with New York as a free agent on July 5 after finishing last year with the Stanley Cup finalist Ottawa Senators.

THIRD STAR – CHRIS MASON, G, NASHVILLE PREDATORS Mason highlights

Mason posted a 2-0-0 record, .50 goals-against average, .984 save percentage and one shutout as Nashville opened the regular season with two home-ice victories. On Oct. 4, Mason made 35 saves in recording his ninth career shutout as the Predators defeated the Colorado Avalanche, 4-0. Two nights later, he recorded 28 saves as Nashville defeated the Dallas Stars, 5-1.
