NEW YORK (AP) -The Dallas Stars said center Mike Ribeiro will stay overnight at a New York hotel after sustaining a throat injury during a loss to the New York Rangers.
Ribeiro was accidentally struck under his chin by the stick of New York's Christopher Higgins as the players crossed paths at center ice in the second period of the Stars' 5-2 loss Wednesday night. Ribeiro stayed down for several minutes, and was doubled over as he was helped to the dressing room.
He was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, and then released. Ribeiro was expected to fly back to Dallas on Thursday.
"There is something wrong with his throat," Stars coach Marc Crawford said. "They have him at the hospital making sure everything is OK after taking the stick in the throat. They are checking to make sure everything is all right in his airways."
Higgins didn't appear to see Ribeiro as they skated in opposite directions. The Rangers forward was given a minor penalty for high-sticking at 15:32 of the second period.
