Forwards Jamie Benn and Ales Hemsky won't play in the Dallas Stars' intrasquad scrimmage at training camp in Cedar Park, Texas, on Sunday as they each continue to recover from offseason hip surgery.
"We thought there might be an opportunity, but we want to make sure they are ready to go," coach Lindy Ruff told Stars Inside Edge on Saturday. "They've both had two real good practices, but they are still not ready for that physical compete at that high a level. We've got an opportunity to take some time with them."
Benn, who led the NHL in scoring last season, had surgery in late April on one hip and in May on the other. He has been rehabbing all summer.
"I felt pretty good," he said after skating Friday, the first day of training camp. "I put in a lot of hard work this summer just working with the trainers and in the gym just trying to get back into practice shape, game shape, and I thought Day 1 went pretty well."
Hemsky had hip surgery in April.
Forward Travis Moen, who is battling a knee injury, did not practice for a second straight day and may not skate until next week.
"Moen had a little procedure and probably won't skate until mid-week next week for the first time," Ruff said. "Hopefully after that, he is ready to go."
