San Jose and Pittsburgh set Cup Final record with four goals in first 5:06

by Tom Gulitti @tomgulittinhl / NHL.com Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH - The San Jose Sharks finally scored first, and second; with two goals in the opening 2:53, they appeared to be well on their way to staying alive in the Stanley Cup Final with a Game 5 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center on Thursday.

The Sharks went on to defeat the Penguins 4-2 to force a Game 6 at Consol Energy Center on Sunday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, TVA Sports), but it wasn't as easy as it initially appeared it would be.

In NHL.com blog, defenseman praises importance that Jones, taking first-period lead had against Penguins

by Brenden Dillon / Special to NHL.com

San Jose defenseman Brenden Dillon will be keeping his own blog throughout the course of the Stanley Cup Final. Dillon will check in after games and on some of the off days in between games.

Here is Dillon's blog following the Sharks 4-2 victory in Game 5 on Thursday:

We had our families out here for Game 5. They all came out from San Jose. My sister and my dad are here. My sister was beyond pumped. She is driving back to Toronto where she goes to college now, but she was excited to be here for sure. A lot of the guys had their wives or girlfriends here.

Karlsson's near-misfire becomes Game 5 winner

Sharks forward almost fans on first-period shot that put San Jose ahead to stay

by Shawn P. Roarke @sroarke_nhl / NHL.com Director of Editorial

PITTSBURGH -- San Jose forward Melker Karlsson would rather be lucky than good, especially with Sharks' season on the line.

Karlsson nearly misfired on his shot from the slot, but the puck fluttered past Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Matt Murray at 14:47 of the first period and stood as the winning goal in San Jose's 4-2 victory in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday.

Jones 'unbelievable' for Sharks again

San Jose extends Stanley Cup Final behind goalie's 44-save performance

by Tom Gulitti @tomgulittinhl / NHL.com Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH -- Sometimes all it takes is a hot goaltender to spoil a party.

It seemed like half the city was either inside Consol Energy Center or outside on the street near the arena Thursday watching and hoping to see the Pittsburgh Penguins lift the Stanley Cup.

Martin Jones and the San Jose Sharks had other plans.

Bad start, Sharks' Jones doom Penguins in Game 5

Pittsburgh's effort negated thanks to three first-period goals for San Jose, goalie's 44-save performance

by Dan Rosen @drosennhl / NHL.com Senior Writer

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins kept lamenting the first five minutes. Even that was too harsh.

They were beaten for roughly the first three minutes against the San Jose Sharks in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at Consol Energy Center on Thursday. They were the better team for most of the final 57, dominant for a lot of those minutes. It doesn't matter one bit.

Blame Martin Jones.

Sharks' elite players break through in Game 5

Burns opens scoring, Couture has three points to help San Jose extend Stanley Cup Final

by Amalie Benjamin @AmalieBenjamin / NHL.com Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH -- The disappearances were notable. No Joe Pavelski. No Joe Thornton. No Logan Couture. No Brent Burns. The players who had led the San Jose Sharks through the first three rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, against the Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues, had mostly been missing in this, their greatest test. Those four players had a combined zero goals and six assists in the first four games of San Jose's first shot at the Stanley Cup Final.

It was not good enough.
