Eric Staal agreed to a two-year, $6.5 million contract with the Minnesota Wild on Monday. It has an average annual value of $3.25 million.

The 34-year-old center is in the final season of a three-year, $10.5 million contract he signed July 1, 2016, and could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Staal has 41 points (18 goals, 23 assists) in 62 games this season. He scored 42 goals last season, his highest total since 2005-06 (45), and had 76 points, his most since 2007-08 (82).

Selected by the Carolina Hurricanes with the No. 2 pick in the 2003 NHL Draft, Staal has 963 points (413 goals, 550 assists) in 1,155 regular-season games with the Wild, Hurricanes and New York Rangers, and 46 points (20 goals, 26 assists) in 58 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He won the Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006.
The Wild (30-27-6) traded center Mikael Granlund to the Nashville Predators for forward Kevin Fiala on Monday. They hold the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference, one point ahead of the Colorado Avalanche, and visit the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; TSN3, FS-N, FS-WI, NHL.TV).
