PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Goaltender Jeremy Smith, a favourite for the U.S. World Junior Team, made 24 saves as the Plymouth Whalers scored five unanswered goals to crush the Saginaw Spirit 5-1 Friday night in Ontario Hockey League action.

Tyler J. Brown and Tyler G. Brown scored 37 seconds apart in the second period and Ryan Hayes, Vern Cooper and Tyler Seguin also scored for the Whalers (7-11-2-0).

Seguin, Plymouth's top draft pick last May, added two assists and was plus-3.

Jack Combs gave Saginaw an early 1-0 lead, but his goal was all the Spirit could muster.

Edward Pasquale finished with 29 saves for Saginaw (12-7-0-0).

The game marked Plymouth head coach Mike Vellucci's first win since last year after Greg Stefan resigned this week to take a scouting position with the Carolina Hurricanes. Stefan replaced Vellucci, still the Whalers' general manager, behind the bench last December.
