BRAMPTON, Ont. - Jake Smith made 19 saves for his first Ontario Hockey League win as the Brampton Battalion defeated the Windsor Spitfires 4-1 on Friday.
The 17-year-old rookie was making his third start of the season and was less than seven minutes away from recording his first shutout, as well, before Windsor finally scored.
?I can?t say I wasn?t thinking about the shutout in the third period, but I?m just happy to get that first win. It?s a pretty awesome feeling,? said Smith.
Connor Jarvis scored his first career OHL goal for the Battalion (3-4-4) and Blake Clarke, Jamie Lewis and Barclay Goodrow added the others.
Brady Vail scored the lone goal for the Spitfires (5-3-3), who lost in regulation for the first time in five outings.
Jordan DeKort stopped 35-of-39 shots in a losing effort for Windsor.
Neither club could produce with the man advantage as Brampton went 0-for-5 and Windsor 0-for-2.
Lewis opened the scoring 7:26 into the first period, firing a shot that went high on DeKort.
Battalion captain, Goodrow, added to his team?s lead less than two minutes later, beating DeKort five hole.
Clarke gave the homeside a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play, after sneaking a low shot by DeKort while positioned at the side of the net.
Jarvis? moment came at the 5:16 mark of the second period, as he pounced on a rebound in the slot.
Smith???s shutout bid was spoiled by Montreal Canadiens' prospect Vail, who took advantage of a Battalion turnover and roofed a shot over the sprawled goaltender.
