Short's three-point night leads Vipers to 7-1 rout of Broncos at RBC Cup

VICTORIA, B.C. - Rob Short had a short-handed goal and added two assists as the Vernon Vipers routed the defending champion Humboldt Broncos 7-1 in Monday's round-robin action at the 2009 RBC Cup.

The game was billed as a possible championship preview between two teams that have combined for six national tier II Junior A hockey titles, but Vernon (2-0) scored the game's first four goals and cruised to victory.

Ryan Santana, Cole Ikkala, Mike Collins, Kellen Jones, Chris Crowell and Sahir Gill also scored for the Pacific Region champion Vipers, while Braden Pimm and Kyle Bigos added three assists each.

Joel Belair scored the lone goal for the Western Region champion Broncos (1-1).

The Vipers put their undefeated record on the line Tuesday against the host Victoria Grizzlies.

Earlier Monday, Mike Farrell scored two of his three goals in a wild third period and the Kingston Voyageurs beat the Summerside Western Capitals 7-5.

Ontario-based Kingston improved to 1-1 at the national tier II Junior A hockey championship, while Summerside fell to 0-2.

The game featured nine goals in the third period after Kingston after a scoreless first and just three goals in the second. Kingston led 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Jarrett Burton, Ben Power, Dustin Walsh and Anthony Geldart also scored for Kingston. Geldart's goal was his first in 79 appearances this season, including regular season and playoff games.

Mitchell Latchford and Kevin Christmas added three assists each.

Mike MacIsaac led Prince Edward Island-based Summerside with a goal and two assists. Josh McKinnon, Brett Gallant, Daniel Whelan and Nathan Snowie also scored.

Kingston goaltender Shawn Sirman was the difference for much of the game for the Central Region champions, turning aside 45 shots overall.

Alex Dupuis stopped 21 shots for Summerside, the Eastern Region champions.
