Shifts of the Night

by Staff
Blackhawks 2, Predators 0

Pouncing on a turnover at the Hawks’ blue line, Patrick Kane took a pass from Patrick Kane, skated in on Pekka Rinne and fired a shot past the Predators’ Finnish goalie for a 2-0 lead just 4:18 into the third period for a 2-0 lead. Up to that point, this game mirrored Game 1, in which Chicago dominated the first  two periods before Nashville flipped it around on them in the third after a fluke goal tied the game early and juiced the Preds’ comeback win.

Avalanche 1, Sharks 0

Rookie Ryan O'Reilly probably dreamed of a top-shelf rifle shot or a neat little backhander as his means of scoring the overtime winner, but his pressure on defenseman Dan Boyle in the San Jose zone caused the Sharks defenseman to hurry an attempted backhanded clear which instead ended up in his own net on one of the first shifts of the extra period, giving the Avalanche a 2-1 series lead.

Flyers 3, Devils 2

Just after the Devils finished killing off an overtime penalty to David Clarkson, the Flyers struck for the winner. Positioned near the right post, Mike Richards twice threw the puck at Martin Brodeur. The first shot got blocked back to him; the second time, the puck skittered through the crease where an unchecked Daniel Carcillo pounced on it and sent it into an open net for the winner.

Coytes 4, Red Wings 2

Looking for their first two-goal lead of the day, the Coyotes received a tremendous effort from the trio of Petr Prucha, Radim Vrbata and Martin Hanzal. They made it a 3-1 game when Vrbata and Prucha completed a give-and-go that culminated with Prucha's first goal of the playoffs at 8:16 of the third period.

Penguins 4, Senators 2

It wasn't a full shift, but Matt Cooke atoned for his boarding penalty by jumping out of the penalty box and grabbing a puck in the neutral zone. He got the puck deep, went to the net and distracted Ottawa goalie Brian Elliott enough to allow Sidney Crosby to score what turned into the winning goal in the final minute of the second period.
