Shawn Mathias scores twice as Belleville tops Ottawa 5-2 @NHLdotcom

OTTAWA - Shawn Mathias scored twice Friday night, including once into an empty net, as the Belleville Bulls defeated the Ottawa 67's 5-2 in Ontario Hockey League action.

Eric Tangradi, Nigel Williams and Shawn Lalonde had singles for the Bulls (38-12-5) who led 1-0 after the first period and took a 2-0 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.

The 67's (25-25-5) got two third-period goals from Jamie McGinn and were on the power play when Mathias iced the game with 38 seconds to play.

Parker Van Buskirk picked up the win in the Bulls goal while Adam Courchaine did all he could for the 67's in his first game back since suffering a cracked finger on his glove hand a week ago.

"I thought he made some big saves but I think a couple of the goals that went by him he'd like to have back," said 67's coach and general manager Brian Kilrea.

"I thought he generally played well allowing just four goals against that team and then the empty net one. It certainly wasn't his fault."

Thomas Nesbitt, a second-year winger for the 67's, was hit in the mouth by a skate in the first period and needed 23 stitches to close the cut. After getting sewn up he put on a full facemask and returned to finish the game.
