SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -The San Jose Sharks called off their trade with New Jersey to reacquire Alex Korolyuk when he refused to return from his native Russia to the NHL.

The Sharks traded their rights to Korolyuk to the Devils before this season, even though he was playing for Chekhov Vityaz, where he has spent most of the last three years.

The Sharks then traded a third-round pick to the Devils on Friday to reacquire Korolyuk, who had 62 goals and 80 assists over parts of six seasons in San Jose. Korolyuk said he would report to San Jose by Sunday, but he apparently changed his mind, San Jose general manager Doug Wilson said.

New Jersey, which needed salary-cap relief, sent high-priced retiring defenseman Vladimir Malakhov and a first-round pick to San Jose to acquire Korolyuk's rights before the season.
