Doan was selected by the original Jets with the No. 7 pick in the 1995 NHL Draft. He played one season in Winnipeg before the franchise moved and became the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996. They were renamed the Arizona Coyotes in 2014.
Former Coyotes players Keith Tkachuk (7), Jeremy Roenick (97) and Teppo Numminen (27), along with former Jets players Bobby Hull (9), Thomas Steen (25) and Dale Hawerchuk (10), have been inducted into the Coyotes Ring of Honor, but none of them had his number retired.
"It's pretty special," Doan said. "The group of guys that have their numbers [in the ring of honor] ... I got to play with a few of them. I got to play against a couple. It was something that was so special to be in that group. It's kind of overwhelming. No one ever thinks about getting your jersey retired. You just want to play a game in the NHL. Even when you're playing you don't think about this stuff. For this to come up was pretty special."
Doan, the franchise leader in goals, assists, points, games, power-play goals (128) and game-winning goals (69), said it has been gratifying to watch the growth of the Coyotes in what was once termed a non-traditional hockey market.
"The fact that we've now been in Arizona longer than we were even in Winnipeg is a testament to the fact that it has grown," he said. "It has gone through some very lean years and we've really challenged our fans at times with some of the situations that the organization was in and made it difficult sometimes for them to hold onto hope, but you've got to be excited about some of the young prospects that they have and some of the young players and the fact that they have been around as long as they have.
"Hopefully, it can start to turn. Nothing would make me happier than for the Arizona Coyotes to do great and go a long ways and to have a lot of success."
Doan represented the Coyotes at the 2004 and 2009 NHL All-Star Games, was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for community service in 2010, and won the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award in 2012.
"Shane Doan is Mr. Coyote and a Valley icon," Coyotes president and CEO Ahron Cohen said. "No one has done more for the Coyotes or the game of hockey in Arizona than Shane. For the past 22 years, Shane has been an incredible ambassador for our franchise and has represented the Coyotes with class, dignity and professionalism. He has given his heart and soul to the Coyotes and is most deserving of this tremendous honor."
