KELOWNA, B.C. - Tyson Sexsmith made 21 saves for Vancouver as the Giants defeated the Kelowna Rockets 2-1 in WHL action on Wednesday night.
Scoring for Vancouver (3-0-0-0) were rookie Evander Kane with his first WHL goal, a power-play marker at 6:57 of the third period, and James Wright with his second of the season at 11:56.
Replying for Kelowna (0-1-1-0) was Cody Almond, who opened the game's scoring at 3:16 of the third with goal-crease chip shot off a centring pass from Colin Long. NHL legend Mark Messier was in attendance to watch his son, defenceman Lyon Messier, play for Kelowna.
Kris Westblom made 34 saves for the Rockets before a sell-out crowd of 6,076, the team's 122nd consecutive sellout at Prospera Place. The Giants turned it on in the third period, firing 17 shots on Kelowna's net, thanks mostly to an effective forecheck. Sexsmith had a relatively easy final period facing just seven shots.
