Blue Jackets defeat Bruins in shootout; Hudler shines for Stars @NHL

Forward Sam Gagner scored in the shootout to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 3-2 win against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Monday.

Goalie Curtis McElhinney made 29 saves on 31 shots for the Blue Jackets. Forward Sonny Milano scored, and forward Brandon Saad and defenseman Seth Jones each had an assist for Columbus.

Forward Jimmy Hayes scored and goalie Anton Khudobin made 11 saves on 13 shots in two periods for the Bruins.

Oilers open Rogers Place with preseason win

The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2 in the first game at Rogers Place.

Iiro Pakarinen, Ryan Vesce, Tyler Pitlick and Kris Versteeg scored for the Oilers, who will play their first season at the new arena after 42 at Northlands Coliseum/Rexall Place.

Kenny Morrison and Freddie Hamilton scored for the Flames.

Jiri Hudler helps Stars defeat Blues

Jiri Hudler had a goal and an assist to help the Dallas Stars defeat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 in the preseason opener for each team at American Airlines Center. 

Patrick Eaves and Patrik Nemeth scored the other Dallas goals. Stars forward Patrick Sharp had two assists. 

Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk scored for the Blues.


Justin Faulk lifts Hurricanes past Capitals

Defenseman Justin Faulk scored a power-play goal to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 2-1 win against the Washington Capitals in overtime at Verizon Center.

Eddie Lack stopped all 16 shots he faced and Alex Nedeljkovic made nine saves on 10 shots for the Hurricanes. Forward Patrick Brown also scored for Carolina.

Capitals forward Tom Wilson sustained an upper-body injury and did not return to the game as a precaution. Defenseman Madison Bowey scored a power-play goal for Washington.

Islanders defeat Flyers

Forward Joshua Ho-Sang had a goal and an assist, and Jean-Francois Berube and Christopher Gibson combined for 28 saves to lead the New York Islanders to a 3-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Barclays Center.

Berube and Gibson each made 14 saves and forward Shane Prince scored a power-play goal. Forward Michael Dal Colle also scored for New York.

Anthony Stolarz made 33 saves on 35 shots for the Flyers.


Adam Henrique, Devils defeat Canadiens

Adam Henrique scored two goals to help the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. 

Michael McLeod also scored for the Devils. Zach Redmond and Markus Eisenschmid each had a goal for the Canadiens. 

Montreal outshot New Jersey 41-27. Scott Wedgewood made 26 saves on 27 shots through two periods for the Devils, and MacKenzie Blackwood made 13 on 14 shots in relief. Canadiens goalie Mike Condon made eight saves on 10 shots in 30:52, and Charlie Lindgren made 16 on 17 shots in relief. 


Devils shut out Flyers

Keith Kinkaid and Anders Lindback combined for 21 saves to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 2-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center.

Kinkaid started and made six saves and Lindback entered during the second period and made 15 saves. Forward Nick Lappin scored two goals for the Devils.

Alex Lyon made 28 saves on 29 shots for the Flyers.


Phil Varone lifts Senators past Maple Leafs 

Phil Varone had two goals and two assists in the Ottawa Senators' 6-3 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. 

Varone and Logan Brown, the Senators' first-round pick (No. 11) at the 2016 NHL Draft, scored in the first period. Matt Puempel, Thomas Chabot and Casey Bailey also scored for Ottawa. 

Andrew Nielsen, Frank Corrado and Jake Gardiner scored for Toronto.


Max Domi powers Coyotes past Kings 

Max Domi, Ryan White and Michael Bunting each had a goal and an assist to help the Arizona Coyotes to a 5-3 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Gila River Arena. 

Luke Schenn, who played for Los Angeles last season before signing with Arizona as an unrestricted free agent on July 23, and Stefan Fournier also scored for the Coyotes. 

Teddy Purcell, who signed with the Kings as an unrestricted free agent on July 6, had a goal and an assist. Kyle Clifford and Trevor Lewis each had a goal. 

Arizona starting goalie Mike Smith made 11 saves on 13 shots, and Louis Domingue made 20 on 21 shots in relief.


Kings edge Coyotes in L.A.

Brett Sutter, Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli each had a goal and assist to lift the Los Angeles Kings to a 4-3 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Staples Center. 

Lucas Lesio also scored for Los Angeles, which got 18 saves from staring goalie Jeff Zatkoff and 10 from Jack Campbell in relief. 

Connor Murphy, Henrik Samuelsson and Dylan Strome scored for Arizona. 


Wild defeat Sabres

The Minnesota Wild defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 at Pegula Ice Arena at Penn State University.

Forward Jason Zucker scored a power-play goal and forward Kurtis Gabriel also scored for the Wild.

Forward Zemgus Girgensons scored for the Sabres.


Oilers defeat Flames in split-squad game

The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 2-1 at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Anton Slepyshev and Jere Sallinen scored for the Oilers. Mark Giordano scored for the Flames.

The game was scoreless before Slepyshev scored on the power play at 7:10 of the third period. Sallinen put Edmonton ahead 2-0 with 1:03 remaining, and Giordano got Calgary on the board with a power-play goal with nine seconds left.
