Senators sign first-round pick O'Brien @NHLdotcom

OTTAWA (AP) -Teenager Jim O'Brien signed with the Ottawa Senators on Monday, giving up his NCAA eligibility after one season at Minnesota.

The 18-year-old center was selected 29th overall in June's draft by Ottawa and will likely spend next season in juniors after attending camp later this month.

"We want him to get ice time," said Senators GM Bryan Murray. "We want him to develop.

O'Brien was used primarily on the fourth line by the Golden Gophers last season and is eager to take on more responsibility.

"I never wanted to take a kid out of school," Murray said. "I never encouraged that. I think Jim feels that this is the best road for him at this point in his career."
