Senators hope Pageau raises team's energy level

by Adam Kimelman

PHILADELPHIA -- Ottawa Senators coach Paul MacLean said there are no messages being sent by center Jean-Gabriel Pageau being called up from Binghamton of the American Hockey League and inserted into the lineup for the game Thursday at the Philadelphia Flyers.

"We're trying to put the best team on the ice to give us a chance to win the game," MacLean, whose team has lost six straight, said after the team's morning skate here at Wells Fargo Center. "Right now we're not winning games, so we need to find a better group to do that with and that's what this is about."

In his first professional season, Pageau has seven goals and 22 assists in 69 AHL games. He played in all situations in Binghamton and was skilled on faceoffs.

"He brings speed and energy and competitive spirit," MacLean said. "We're confident he's going to give us a shot of energy in the game [Thursday]. He's worked very hard to develop really well in the American Hockey League. He's not a player we expected to have in our lineup at the start of this year … [but] the circumstances of the season is another example of a player taking advantage of the opportunity that multiple injuries have presented to our organization. He's growing as a player and has earned the opportunity to be here and show us if he can play at this level."

MacLean said there would be one other lineup change from the Senators' previous game, a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday: Robin Lehner would start in goal. MacLean said Craig Anderson would be back in net for the game Friday at the New Jersey Devils.

Here is how the Senators likely will look when they take the ice Thursday against the Flyers:

Guillaume Latendresse - Kyle Turris - Daniel Alfredsson

Cory Conacher - Mika Zibanejad - Jakob Silfverberg

Matt Kassian - Zack Smith - Chris Neil

Erik Condra - Jean-Gabriel Pageau - Colin Greening

Marc Methot - Eric Gryba

Chris Phillips - Andre Benoit

Patrick Wiercioch - Sergei Gonchar

Robin Lehner

Craig Anderson

Scratched: Peter Regin, Jim O'Brien, Mike Lundin

Injured: Milan Michalek (knee), Jason Spezza (back), Mike Hoffman (collarbone), Erik Karlsson (Achilles), Jared Cowen (hip)
