NEWARK, N.J. -- Goalie Cory Schneider will make his second straight start when the New Jersey Devils host the Buffalo Sabres at Prudential Center on Saturday.
Devils coach Peter DeBoer made the announcement during his pregame meeting with the media.
Schneider made 16 saves in a 5-2 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday at PNC Arena. The 27-year-old goalie is 3-5-3 with a 1.89 goals-against average and .923 save percentage this season.
"He didn't get a ton of work [against Carolina], so I didn't feel the fatigue was an issue," DeBoer said. "I thought he played well and got the win and we're going to Montreal on Monday [to play the Canadiens] and that's a game we want [Martin Brodeur] to play so it just made sense."
It will mark the first time this season Schneider will make back-to-back starts.
DeBoer also will replace forward Mattias Tedenby with Cam Janssen.
"I think we want to rotate in fresh legs," DeBoer said. "Carolina's lineup is a speed lineup. The Sabres is a crash and bang lineup. So that's the thought process."
DeBoer said he was very pleased with the play of defenseman Anton Volchenkov against the Hurricanes. Volchenkov returned to the lineup after missing seven games with a leg-muscle pull and finished with five blocked shots, five hits and a plus-2 rating in 19:11 of ice time.
"He helped our penalty kill, was tough to play against in the corners and did a great job [on] the Staal brothers, making them pay the price," DeBoer said of Volchenkov. "He was very consistent before he got hurt … maybe our most consistent."
Playing opposite Schneider will be Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth (1-5-1, 2.88 GAA, .906 save percentage).
"We can't tax [Ryan] Miller too much; we had a plan we felt very comfortable with before we got here and so we'll stick to that plan," Sabres coach Ted Nolan said. "Jhonas will be in net."
The Sabres snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday. Miller made 22 saves to earn his fifth win in 20 games. Nolan acknowledged the goalie switch is the only lineup change. Forward Mikhail Grigorenko and defenseman Brayden McNabb remain healthy scratches.
