There was an unexpected participant at the New Jersey Devils' optional practice on Wednesday afternoon. After suffering a lower-body injury and being placed on injured reserve on Jan. 23, Cory Schneider made his first appearance on the ice with his teammates.

Schneider was joined by Eddie Lack, Mirco Mueller, Jimmy Hayes, Will Butcher, Blake Pietila, Nick Lappin and Miles Wood. The group was on the ice for an hour where Schneider took shots from his teammates.
"Hopefully that's a sign," Schneider said. "Those are the types of things that you can't really account for. I'm listening to the trainers and listening to my body and making sure that I can be as close to 100 percent that I can be before I come back."
The goaltender looked comfortable on the ice, even making a few sprawling saves as his teammates challenged him.
"I'm putting myself in some more realistic positions," Schneider said. "Just trying to get a feel for where I'm at and keep ramping it up. This is the third day I've skated and it's gotten more intense and game-like, so it was pretty good today."
Schneider said he gives a "soft no" to returning against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night, though he may participate in morning skate.
"For me, you can easily play through some discomfort," Schneider said. "If I come back, I want to make sure I'm a difference maker and I'm good enough where I can be who I am."
Schneider has been watching from a distance as his team stays in the thick of the playoff hunt. It hasn't been easy to be away from his teammates, and has certainly been difficult to watch it all unfold without him.
"It's been nerve-wracking to watch the games," Schneider said. "I get more nervous watching than I do playing. I've tried to stay really involved, follow the team closely. Living and dying with every single play. It doesn't change for me. I'm hoping that I can come back and bring my intensity up right away and be prepared for the stretch we have coming up should I play any or all of them.
