Schmermund's shootout goal leads lowly Winter Hawks over Chiefs @NHLdotcom

PORTLAND, Ore. - Matt Schmermund beat Kevin Armstrong in the fifth round of the shoot out to lead the Portland Winter Hawks to a 3-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs in Western Hockey League action Sunday.

Schmermund also scored in the second period to pace Portland (11-58-2-1) Travis Ehrhardt also scored and had an assist.

Judd Blackwater scored both goals for Spokane (50-16-1-5).

Hawks goalie, Kurtis Mucha (9-36) made 35 saves for the win, while Kevin Armstrong made 26 saves to fall to 20-6 on the season.

Spokane finished the season third in the Western Conference, while Portland ended up last in the league.
