Schenn's short-handed game winner lifts Brandon past Regina 5-3

BRANDON, Man. - Brayden Schenn's short-handed goal with 3:36 left in the third period was the game winner as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Regina Pats 5-3 Friday night in the Western Hockey League season-opener for both teams.

Andrew Clark had a pair of goals while Jay Fehr and Matt Lowry, with an empty-netter, also scored for the Wheat Kings, who finished second in the East Division behind the Pats with a 42-24-3-3 record and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Fehr added three assists for a four-point night.

Defenceman Victor Bartley, Matt Strueby and Scott Doucet replied for the Pats, who posted a 44-22-4-2 record but also suffered a first-round playoff loss, falling to the Swift Current Broncos.

Brandon netminder Joe Caligiuri made 28 saves, while Jeff Bosch stopped 20 shots for Regina.
