Schappert scores goal, assist as Seattle wins home opener, 3-1 over Everett

SEATTLE - Josh Schappert scored on the power play and added an assist as the Seattle Thunderbirds won their Western Hockey League home opener 3-1 over the Everett Silvertips on Saturday.

Schappert scored in the first period, Greg Scott tallied shorthanded in the second period and Scott Jackson put the game away with an even-strength goal at 16:37 of the second.

The T-birds (1-0-1-0) had eight different players earn a point, while Everett, which led the WHL with 54 wins last season, continue to spiral with a 0-4-0-0 record.

Jonathan Harty scored at 6:46 of the third period to end the shutout bid by Seattle goaltender Riki Helenius, who stopped 23 shots to pick up his first WHL win.
