Sawada scores tiebreaker in third as IceCaps defeat Portland Pirates 3-2 @NHLdotcom

ST. JOHN, Ind. - Ray Sawada scored a tiebreaking goal at 12:34 of the third period and the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Portland Pirates 3-2 in American Hockey League action Tuesday night.

St. John's (30-34-6) had goals from Cody Sol and Josh Lunden, while starting goalie Mark Dekanich made 30 saves.

Phil Lane and Brendan Shinnimin scored for Portland (38-27-5). Mark Visentin made 20 saves for the Pirates.

Dekanich made several highlight reel saves Tuesday, but the most memorable might have been a shot from teammate Dean Arsene in the dying seconds of the game.

?I think he was trying to rim it and obviously the face-off didn't get won far enough back," said Dekanich. "He just turned around and took a slap shot and lucky enough I was ready and made a good save. He might owe me a coffee, or be pouring me coffee for the rest of the year.?

The IceCaps got out to a lead in the first period at 11:57 thanks to an unlikely source in Sol, who fired a point shot that deceived Visentin and bounced in.

Sol said it didn't matter to him how the puck went in, so long as it found the net.

???I was trying to go bar-down, but it didn't really work," he said. "I guess through his shoulder counts still. It felt good to get my first goal.???

St. John's doubled their lead shortly after the start of the second period on a goal from Lunden at 1:04.

Lunden scored a goal from right in front of the net on a nifty play from Eric O'Dell and Kael Mouillierat.

O'Dell gained the zone and dangled around a defender before passing to Mouillierat, who was stationed off the side behind the Portland net. Mouillierat turned and found Lunden streaking towards the net, who buried the puck.

The Pirates pulled the game within one on a goal from Lane at 11:18 in the second.

Lane made a beautiful deke and held the puck to the outside around O'Neill, who found himself the lone defenceman on the 2-on-1. He kept the puck to the outside and shelved it over Dekanich's short-side from mere feet away.

Portland tied the game up at 10:23 on a power play goal from Shinnimin.

Shinnimin fired a wrist shot that trickled through Dekanich.

Sawada got a tip on a Ramsey shot from the point 4-on-4 for his 12th goal of the season.

St. John's was 1 for 5 on the power play and Portland was 0 for 6.
