The struggle for playoff spots is heating up in the Ontario Hockey League.
Anthony Luciani and Greg McKegg scored twice as the Erie Otters dropped the Ottawa 67's 7-1 Saturday night. The win tied the Otters with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for the fifth spot in the OHL's Western Conference. Both teams have 69 points, although the Greyhounds have a game in hand. Sault Ste. Marie had Saturday night off, and Erie has six regular season games left.
The Otters have scored 15 goals in their last two games and 31 in their last five games. They have 235 for the season.
Erie exploded for four goals in the decisive second period, including three straight in a 3:35 span early in the frame.
Elsewhere in the OHL it was Kingston 6 Belleville 5 (OT); Guelph 3 Plymouth 2; Saginaw 4 Sarnia 1; Barrie 6 Niagara 1 and Owen Sound 7 Peterborough 4.
At Erie, Pa., Mike Cazzola added a power-play goal and three assists for the Otters (31-24-7), while Brett Appio and Shawn Szydlowski also tallied.
Shane Prince was the lone scorer for Ottawa (32-23-7).
Frontenacs 6 Bulls 5 (OT)
At Belleville, Ont., Ethan Werek scored twice including the winner as Kingston nipped the Bulls.
Taylor Doherty had a goal and two assists for the Frontenacs (32-26-4), while Derek Froats and Corey Durocher chipped in as well.
Alex Aleardi had a hat trick for Belleville (18-36-8), while Austen Brassard and Kyle DeCoste also tallied.
Storm 3 Whalers 2
At Plymouth, Mich., Guelph scored a goal in each period and held on to beat the Whalers.
Brandon Foote made 42 saves in goal for the Storm (29-28-4), while Adam Comrie, Taylor Beck and Peter Holland scored the goals.
Tyler Brown and Ryan Hayes tallied for Plymouth (36-24-2).
Spirit 4 Sting 1
At Saginaw, Mich., four different players scored for the Spirit as they beat Sarnia.
Ivan Telegin led the way with a goal and an assist for Saginaw (30-25-6), while Josh Shalla, Jordan Szwarz and Tyler Murovich scored one each.
Craig Hottot had the only goal for Sarnia (16-42-4).
Colts 6 IceDogs 1
At Barrie, Ont., Luke Pither had a natural hat trick as the Colts trounced Niagara.
Kyle Clifford scored twice and added an assist for Barrie (51-8-2), while Alex Hutchings had a single.
Andrew Agozzino was the lone scorer for Niagara (22-32-7).
Attack 7 Petes 4
At Owen Sound, Ont., the Attack rallied to a win over Peterborough.
Jason Wilson, Grant McGee, Milan Doczy and Joey Hishon scored in the final period for Owen Sound (27-29-7), while Myles Doan, Mike Halmo and Bobby Mignardi also tallied.
Mike Lomas had two goals for the Petes (25-34-4), while Matt Puempel and Austin Watson had markers.
