Preview: Sharks at Capitals

San Jose has lost three straight; Washington after sixth consecutive victory

by Katie Brown / Correspondent

SHARKS (6-6-0) at CAPITALS (8-2-1)

Sharks team scope

Goalie Martin Jones will start for the San Jose Sharks, who have lost three consecutive games. Washington is the first stop on a six-game road trip. "Winning would be nice," coach Peter DeBoer said. "We've lost three in a row. Obviously, I'd like our game to be great, I'd like a 60-minute effort, all the clichés. But bottom line is we want to win here, do enough to win, and find a way to get this rolling in the right direction." Rookie Kevin Labanc was recalled from San Jose of the American Hockey League on Monday and will make his NHL debut. Several of Labanc's family and friends will be traveling from New York to watch his first game. "He's excited, and we're excited to get a look at him," DeBoer said. "He's earned the right to be here. He's gone down there, and after a great camp he's followed it up with a great start and deserves a chance to get up here and play."

Capitals team scope

Goalie Braden Holtby will start for the Washington Capitals. He is 6-2-1, with a 2.20 goals-against average and .921 save percentage this season. Washington has won five straight games and play the finale of a three-game homestand. "They're a good hockey team," coach Barry Trotz said of the Sharks. "They're the defending Western Conference champions. That says it all. They're going to be desperate. They've lost three in a row and they're starting a six-game road trip with us staring them in the front windshield. They're going to bring their best game."
