Hertl scores OT winner in a 4-3 victory over Kings

LOS ANGELES -- Tomas Hertl scored 1:13 into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 4-3 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday.

Hertl scored his 23rd goal on a wraparound after Kings goalie Jonathan Quick overcommitted at the near post.
"It's so nice because lately, the chances, I couldn't bury them and help the team," Hertl said. "This one, in overtime, for sure felt really nice, and hopefully I can get a little more going."

Brent Burns and Nick Bonino each scored on the power play, and Zach Sawchenko made 33 saves for his first NHL win for the Sharks (25-25-7), who were 0-3-1 in their past four games. Erik Karlsson had two assists in his first game since Jan. 20 because of a forearm injury that required surgery. He missed 15 games.
"I think when we do the things that we're good at, we're a good team just like any other team in this league," Karlsson said. "The margins are not as big as people think. I just think that we have a little bit of learning to do in how to keep it on a consistent level a little bit more often."
Sawchenko responded favorably after allowing two goals on his left glove side in the first period, including saving a shorthanded shot by Adrian Kempe on a 2-on-1 break at 8:53 of the third period.
"He rebounded and found a way to settle himself down and make some saves when he needed to, so I thought he played real solid in the second and third period," San Jose coach Bob Boughner said.
Trevor Moore had a goal and two assists, Andreas Athanasiou and Phillip Danault each had a goal and an assist, and Quick made 26 saves for the Kings (32-19-8), who had won three straight.
"It's a good point considering how sloppily we played," Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan said. "It's a point on a night where we probably didn't deserve a point, so let's move on. Let's fix a few things, a lot of things, and get ready to play again."
Alexander Barabanov tied it 3-3 at 1:21 of the third period with a tip-in from the slot set up by Karlsson.
"I just blindly did it," Karlsson joked when asked about his 20th assist. "No, we had a similar situation right at the end of the second, I think, and he kind of peeled off. I told him, 'Just go there, and if it hits you … Like I'm going to shoot it hard, you never know.' And we connected right after, so it was nice."

Moore scored shorthanded to put Los Angeles up 3-1 at 10:40 of the second period on a wrist shot from the slot.
Bonino cut it to 3-2 at 12:13, reaching out with his stick to tap in a bouncing rebound.
San Jose was 2-for-6 (33.3 percent) on the power play. Los Angeles was 0-for-4.
"Six minors, when's the last time we took six minors? Four in the offensive zone," McLellan said. "We played right into their hands. Their special teams are very good, and so it was not a good night for us."
The Kings led 2-1 after the first period on goals eight seconds apart from Danault and Athanasiou.
Danault tied it 1-1 at 5:58, scoring into an open net after Sawchenko could not cleanly catch Athanasiou's shot and Moore collected the loose puck.

Athanasiou made it 2-1 at 6:06, beating Sawchenko over his left glove hand. It was his fourth goal in a three-game goal streak, three of which have come in the past two games since he replaced Viktor Arvidsson (lower body) on the second line with Danault and Moore.
"They have so much tenacity and hunt in their game, and yet they're responsible defensively, so that makes it fairly easy for an individual to go in there and play," McLellan said of Danault and Moore. "If I'm sitting on the bench, I want to be on that line right now."
Burns put the Sharks ahead 1-0 2:39 into the first period with his sixth goal. His shot from the right point went in following a redirection off the stick of Kempe.
