Sam Bennett signed a two-year, $3.9 million contract with the Calgary Flames on Wednesday. It has an average annual value of $1.95 million.

"It's a big relief," Bennett told the Calgary Sun. "It was a long summer of not knowing what was going to happen. I'm just really excited to finally get it done and I can't wait to get back to Calgary and skate with all the guys."

The 21-year-old forward was a restricted free agent. Selected by the Flames with the No. 4 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, he played one NHL game during the 2014-15 season and had three goals and one assist in 11 games in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"He played in playoffs his first year in the League," general manager Brad Treliving said. "… He had an excellent year last year. He's playing in a premier position. A hard position in a hard league and he's still adjusting. He's poised to have an excellent year. I believe in this kid and I think he's going to be a real good player."

Bennett had 36 points (18 goals, 18 assists) in 77 games as rookie in 2015-16 and 26 points (13 goals, 13 assists) in 81 games last season.

"We had a long talk after (signing)," general manager Brad Treliving said. "Sam's a player and he's eager to get back playing. That's where his focus is and that's where our focus is. Business is a part of the game, and I think this gets him stabilized for the next two years and allows him to not worry about the business side and focused on the playing side.

"He's had a terrific summer and he's in great spirits. The message to Sam is the same message to all of the players: We're eager to get going and let's get on with it and get it started next week."
