BUFFALO -- Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel, the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, will wear No. 15 when he's ready to make his NHL debut.

"I think if the opportunity presented itself to make the team and be a part of the Sabres next year, I'd be wearing No. 15," Eichel said Friday prior to a development camp scrimmage.

Eichel was given a No. 15 jersey when he was picked by the Sabres at the draft, but that number represented his draft year.

"I had a few numbers that I had in mind," said Eichel, who wore No. 9 at Boston University. "I didn't really want to pick one because I didn't want to make it seem like I was content with already making the team. It's a number that my sister's worn and my dad's worn and I've worn before. It's their lucky numbers and it happened to be the year I got drafted. I like the number. I think it'd be really nice to wear if the opportunity presents itself to be on the Sabres next year."

Eichel wore No. 9 representing the United States at the 2015 IIHF World Championship. During Sabres development camp, he's worn No. 41.

"I think [41] is just a number and I'll get another number at training camp," Eichel said. "Fifteen is not my number until I make the team."

Buffalo opens this season on Oct. 8 against the Ottawa Senators.
