Ryan Kesler lifts Ducks past Flames

ANAHEIM -- Ryan Kesler scored two power-play goals, and Jonathan Bernier made 25 saves to help the Anaheim Ducks defeat the Calgary Flames 4-1 on Sunday.
It was the Ducks' 24th straight win against the Flames at Honda Center, setting the NHL record for the longest home winning streak against one team. Anaheim hasn't lost to Calgary at home since Jan. 19, 2004.

"For us, we want to ride the wave," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "And for them, they'd like it to crash."
Ryan Getzlaf, who returned to the Anaheim lineup after missing two games with an upper-body injury, and Corey Perry each had three assists. Getzlaf tied Teemu Selanne for the most assists in Ducks history (531).
Anaheim (6-5-2) has won two straight. It has won six in a row against Calgary, including all five games last season.
The Flames (5-8-1) have lost two games in a row and four of five.

Ducks defenseman Clayton Stoner opened the scoring with his first goal of the season, knocking in a loose puck to put Anaheim up 1-0 2:29 into the game.
The Flames tied it 1-1 when Johnny Gaudreau's shot went in off Calgary forward Alex Chiasson with 3:45 left in the first period.
The Ducks scored two goals in the second period and one in the third, and the Flames failed to capitalize on their offensive pressure. Calgary outshot Anaheim 26-21 but had four shots on goal in the third period.
"In the third period, we didn't generate much because they didn't play with any risk at all," Flames captain Mark Giordano said. "It's tough to win many games when you're not putting more than one in the net. We've just got to find a way to score some ugly ones."
It was the Ducks who scored the ugly ones, benefiting from a strong net-front presence.

Kesler scored his first of the night at 3:18 of the second period to make it 2-1. Perry lost control of the puck after a spin move in front of the net, but Kesler found it and put it past goalie Chad Johnson's glove.
Andrew Cogliano made it 3-1 at 7:54 of the second, putting in a rebound of his own shot.
Kesler converted on the power play for the second time at 13:29 of the third, jamming in another rebound for his fourth goal.
"It's a tough place to go, but that's where a lot of your goals are scored from," Carlyle said. "There's not a lot of fancy goals being scored. You really have to get inside people and drive the net and slap those pucks in from the 5-to 10-foot range."
It was Bernier's first win with the Ducks since being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 8. He was 0-1-0 with a 2.73 goals-against average and .929 save percentage0 in three games entering Sunday. John Gibson had made five straight starts.
Johnson made 17 saves.

Goal of the game

Stoner's goal was his first in exactly a year. He had not scored since Nov. 6, 2015, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. "Perry took it to the net and the rebound popped out," Stoner said. "It's always nice to get the ol' goose egg out of the goal column because it's been a little while, but I don't think I'll turn into a goal-scorer overnight."

Credit Ducks defenseman Kevin Bieksa with a save for getting to the part of the net that Bernier wasn't able to and stopping Gaudreau from scoring on a sharp-angled wrist shot at 19:05 of the first period.

Unsung moment of the game

The Ducks' first goal was set up by Getzlaf when he swiped a pass intended for Flames forward Sam Bennett near the Calgary blue line and fed Perry for a shot that Johnson stopped. Getzlaf got the puck back and passed again to Perry for a shot that Bennett blocked in front, but Stoner was there to shoot it past Johnson.

Highlight of the game

Josh Manson sent the puck up to the Ducks blue line, where Jakob Silfverberg collected it before skating through center ice and passing to Cogliano on the rush. Cogliano got a shot off that Johnson stopped, but the Ducks forward put in the rebound while falling to the ice along the goal line to the left of the Flames net.
