PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Ryan Hayes scored two goals as the Plymouth Whalers downed the Sarnia Sting 5-3 Wednesday in Ontario Hockey League action.
Plymouth (23-21-5-0) moved within two points of Sarnia (24-20-2-3) for fifth spot in the OHL Western Conference standings. The Whalers got a goal and an assist from Tyler Seguin, with singles coming from Matt Caria and R.J. Mahalak. A.J. Jenks chipped in two helpers.
Goalie Matt Hackett earned the win with 39 saves.
Sarnia scored all their goals with the extra man, including two on a third period five-minute power play when Plymouth defenceman Scott Fletcher was called for a lone fighting major after getting tangled up with Sting captain Matt Martin.
Mark Katic and Justin DiBenedetto each had a goal and assist, with Steve Ferry adding the other. Forward Jamie Arniel had one assist to extend his point scoring streak to 15 games, but his OHL-best goal-scoring streak was halted at ten games.
Dan Spence turned aside 37 shots in a losing effort.
