WINDSOR, Ont. - Ryan Ellis scored the only goal of the shootout and Philipp Grubauer made 25 saves as the Windsor Spitfires defeated the Brampton Battalion 2-1 on Ontario Hockey League action Thursday.
Alex O'Neil opened the scoring with his first of the season for the Battalion in the first period when he tapped home his own rebound from the side of the Windsor net.
The Spitfires were listless until a spirited fight between the Battalion's Matt MacLeod and Windsor's Craig Duininck appeared to spark things midway through the second period.
Kenny Ryan tied the game with just over a minute and a half left in the second. Ryan scored his ninth goal of the season by rifling home a slapshot from the right faceoff circle behind Brampton netminder Patrick Killeen.
A scoreless third period and overtime session set the stage for Ellis' heroics.
Grubauer picked up his fourth straight victory since being acquired from the Belleville Bulls earlier this month. Patrick Killeen was stellar in making 42 stops at the other end for Brampton.
The Spitfires were without the services of Zack Kassian, who was handed a 20-game suspension earlier in the day.
Kassian received the ban after a violent collision with Barrie Colts forward Matt Kennedy on Jan 14. Kassian was assessed a five-minute penalty for charging and a game misconduct - while Kennedy was left with stitches and a concussion.
Windsor was also without Adam Henrique, who was serving the second game of a five-game suspension for a bullying incident against Sault Ste. Marie.
