Russia names roster for series against CHL all-stars

by Adam Kimelman

Defenseman Ivan Provorov and left wing Evgeny Svechnikov, first-round picks at the 2015 NHL Draft, were among the 34 players named Monday by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation for the 2015 CHL Canada-Russia Series.

Team Russia will play two games each against players from the Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. All players picked for the team are eligible to play for Russia at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Provorov, a 6-foot-1, 201-pound defenseman selected by the Philadelphia Flyers with the seventh pick, is tied for third among WHL defensemen with 14 points in 12 games with Brandon. Last season, he led WHL rookies and was fourth among defensemen with 61 points in 60 games.

Svechnikov, a 6-foot-2, 199-pound left wing selected 19th by the Detroit Red Wings, has eight goals and 12 points in 11 games with Cape Breton of the QMJHL. Last season, he was second among QMJHL rookies with 78 points in 55 games, and third with 32 goals.

Of the players picked for the team, 25 are eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft.

In addition to Provorov and Svechnikov, seven other players have been drafted: defensemen Sergei Boikov (Colorado Avalanche), Dmitrii Sergeev (St. Louis Blues), and Sergey Zborovskiy (New York Rangers), and forwards Alexander Dergachyov (Kings), Radel Fazleev (Flyers), and Iakov Trenin (Nashville Predators). Defenseman Damir Sharipzyanov signed with the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent.

Team Russia will play Team WHL on Nov. 9 in Kelowna, British Columbia, and Nov. 10 in Kamloops, British Columbia; Team OHL on Nov. 12 in Owen Sound, Ontario, and Nov. 16 in Windsor, Ontario; and Team QMJHL on Nov. 17 in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and Nov. 19 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
