Kings need stars to step up game vs. Sharks

San Jose's top players are outplaying their Los Angeles counterparts

by Shawn P. Roarke @sroarke_nhl / NHL.com Director of Editorial

LOS ANGELES -- Superstars win series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Conventional wisdom says the best players play their best when the stakes are the highest.

That has been the case for only one team through the first two games of the Western Conference First Round Series between the Los Angeles Kings and the San Jose Sharks. So far, it's the stars from the Sharks who are shining the brightest; in large part, that's why San Jose is flying home with a 2-0 series lead after grinding out a 2-1 victory in Game 2 at Staples Center on Saturday.

Instant analysis: Sharks vs. Kings, Game 2

Goalie Jones, defenseman Martin come up big for San Jose

by Shawn P. Roarke @sroarke_nhl / NHL.com Director of Editorial

LOS ANGELES -- The San Jose Sharks sprung another surprise on the Los Angeles Kings in Game 2 of their Western Conference First Round series, powering to a 2-1 victory at Staples Center on Saturday. San Jose leads the best-of-7 series 2-0.

What we learned: The Sharks can play the same suffocating brand of defense that has been the Kings' stock-in-trade for the past five years. Los Angeles had five shots in the first period and two in the first 10 minutes of the second. San Jose was not much more industrious but did not need to be after scoring on its first shot and on a 5-on-3 power play in the second period to take control.

by Shawn P. Roarke @sroarke_nhl / NHL.com Director of Editorial

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The return of defenseman Alec Martinez to the Los Angeles Kings lineup didn't last long. So, most likely, Drew Doughty's night in Game 2 of the Western Conference First Round on Saturday will get much longer.

Martinez returned in Game 1 on Thursday against the San Jose Sharks but sustained an apparent lower-body injury in the second period while blocking a shot. He did not play in the third period of the 4-3 loss that gave San Jose the lead in the best-of-7 series.
