Kucherov is a difference-maker for Lightning

Forward scored twice in Game 1 vs. Red Wings, has developed into one of NHL's best players

by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika / Columnist

TAMPA -- Nikita Kucherov plays for the Tampa Bay Lightning. On his days off, he can go outside in the Florida sun. But at least sometimes, he stays inside, boots up his laptop and watches video.

He studies goal-scorers, like Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin and Chicago Blackhawks right wing Patrick Kane, and how they slow down the game, how they find openings to make plays, how they shoot.

Situation Room: Goal overturned after review

R1, Gm1: The Red Wings challenge the Lightning's goal and after video review, it is determined the play was offside, resulting in no goal

  • 01:12 •

At 6:55 of the third period in the Red Wings/Lightning game, Detroit requested a Coach's Challenge to review whether Tampa Bay was off-side prior to Victor Hedman's goal.

After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Linesman determined that Tampa Bay's Jonathan Drouin was off-side prior to the goal. According to Rule 78.7, "The standard for overturning the call in the event of a 'GOAL' call on the ice is that the Linesman, after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Toronto Video Room, determines that one or more Players on the attacking team preceded the puck into the attacking zone prior to the goal being scored and that, as a result, the play should have been stopped for an "Off-side" infraction; where this standard is met, the goal will be disallowed."

Five keys for Red Wings vs. Lightning Game 1

Goaltending, matchups among factors to watch

by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika / Columnist

TAMPA -- The Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning begin their Eastern Conference First Round series on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; CBC, NBCSN, TVA Sports, FS-D, FS-F). Here are five keys for Game 1:

1. Goaltending: It's always key, but it will be especially so in this series, with each team struggling to score. Ben Bishop defeated the Red Wings in the first round last year and took the Lightning to the Stanley Cup Final, and he likely will be a Vezina Trophy finalist again this season. Petr Mrazek started for the Red Wings in this series last season, but Jimmy Howard is back in net.

Datsyuk looking to make some more magic

Red Wings forward has Lightning on edge starting final playoff run

by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika / Columnist

TAMPA -- This could be the last act of the "Magic Man." Unless the Detroit Red Wings can talk him out of it, Pavel Datsyuk will retire from the NHL after the Stanley Cup Playoffs and go home to Russia even though he has a season left on his contract.

It's easy to say we should soak it up. It's easy to say we should appreciate Datsyuk's skill, creativity and hustle while we can.

But the Detroit Red Wings forwards practiced on the same line Tuesday and might reunite Wednesday for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Tampa Bay Lightning (7 p.m.; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports, FS-D, FS-F).
