Rookie Michael McCarron scores three times, St. John's downs Albany 5-1 @NHL

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Rookie Michael McCarron scored the second hat trick of his American Hockey League career and Eddie Pasquale stopped 45 shots as the St. John's IceCaps toppled the visiting Albany Devils 5-1 on Wednesday.

McCarron, who was drafted by the Canadiens in the first round of the 2013 NHL draft, has 13 goals and 24 points in 28 games with St. John's ? Montreal's AHL affiliate.

Angelo Miceli and Joel Hanley also scored for the IceCaps (14-7-7) while Morgan Ellis chipped in with two assists.

Blake Pietila found the back of the net for the Devils (16-7-3), who have dropped three straight games.

Scott Wedgewood started in net for Albany but was pulled after giving up three goals on six shots in 8:29 of work. Yann Danis finished the game and stopped 15-of-17 shots in relief.

St. John's went 2 for 6 on the power play while the Devils failed to score on nine chances with the man advantage.
