Reports: Phaneuf to captain Leafs
NHL.com @NHLdotcomAccording to TSN, Dion Phaneuf is expected to be named the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs at a Monday afternoon press conference.
The Leafs have not had a captain since Mats Sundin left after the 2007-08 season. Last season, Tomas Kaberle, Mike Komisarek and Francois Beauchemin and Phaneuf were alternate captains.
Phaneuf, 25, was acquired from the Calgary Flames in one of the 2009-10 season's biggest trades on Jan. 31. Phaneuf, winger Fredrik Sjostrom and prospect Keith Aulie went to the Leafs in exchange for Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and Ian White.
Phaneuf played a total of 81 games last season between the Leafs and Flames, scoring 12 goals and 20 assists.
