Clarke MacArthur, who scored 16 goals last season playing for the Buffalo Sabres and Atlanta Thrashers, became an unrestricted free agent Wednesday when the Thrashers walked away from a $2.4 million salary awarded to the forward by an arbitrator, according to a TSN report.

MacArthur, acquired from the Sabres at the trade deadline for a pair of picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, had 3 goals and 9 points in 21 games with Atlanta after registering 13 goals and 26 points in 60 games for Buffalo.

The 25-year-old MacArthur, originally drafted in the third round by the Sabres in 2003, had a career-high 17 goals during the 2008-09 season, his first full NHL campaign. In 208 career games over parts of four seasons, he has totaled 44 goals and 88 points.
