(Edmonton, AB) -The Edmonton Oilers Alumni group announced today that they are now accepting applications for the annual Al Hamilton Scholarship Award. Applications for this prestigious recognition will be accepted until May 31, 2018. High school students and prospective university or college students in Northern Alberta are eligible to apply. Al Hamilton, the first captain in Oilers history, wore the 'C' for four seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA) and excelled as a defenceman and leader. The Al Hamilton Scholarship Award is granted annually to students from Northern Alberta who excel in academics, athletics and community service. This year, there are two scholarships available for two deserving students. The value of each scholarship is $2,000 per school year to a maximum of four (4) years, equating to $8,000.

The Oilers Alumni are active in the community year-round. Complementing their efforts, the Al Hamilton Scholarship Award is committed to providing deserving students the opportunity to pursue higher education. This prestigious award not only represents the class and generosity of the Oilers Alumni member it is named after, but epitomizes the genuine desire of the Oilers Alumni to support community initiatives and give back.
When Hamilton's #3 Oilers jersey was retired, the scholarship was created in his name and it has since helped many deserving students further their education. When Hamilton selects the two successful candidates, the students' scholastic effort is important, but so is their overall character, their involvement in sports or other extracurricular activities and their level of need.
"The quality of applicants over the years has been exceptional. We are especially proud of our recipients who go on to do great work in the community and achieve great success throughout their post-secondary education," said Hamilton. "We look forward to receiving applications this year and seeing what amazing things our youth are doing.
"This scholarship is all about people helping people and our community becoming more enriched by young people following their academic goals and dreams."
Last year's scholarship was awarded to Blair Grimes of Edmonton, AB and Amy Jakubec of Viking, AB. Both are pursuing Bachelor Degrees at universities in Edmonton, MacEwan University and Kings University respectively, as well as maintaining their participation in competitive sports. Amy spent her first year of university studying Chemistry while playing guard for the Kings University Eagles women's basketball team. While working on her Nursing degree, Blair Grimes coached synchronized swimming and played handball. Both were thrilled to be recipients of the scholarship.
"I was honoured to be chosen as a recipient for this prestigious award. Being recognized for this scholarship continues to show me that dedication to athletics, academics and my community is well worth the effort," said Grimes. To apply, candidates must complete the online application form and include their most recent high school transcript, a 500-word essay on why the candidate believes they deserve the scholarship and two letters of recommendation.
