REGINA - Rookie sensation Jordan Weal scored the shootout winner to give the Regina Pats a 2-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels (3-3-0-3) in WHL action Sunday night in Regina.

After a scoreless first period, Regina (3-2-0-2) opened up the scoring 13:25 into the second when Rudolf Cerveny threw the puck in front and Matt Strueby banged it in for his fourth goal of the year. Also assisting on the goal was Regina captain Victor Bartley.

Red Deer answered back three minutes later after Cerveny took a retaliation penalty to give the Rebels a man advantage. Scoring the power-play goal was Brennan Wray with assists from Willie Coetzee Brett Ferguson.

After a scoreless third neither team was able to end it in overtime, though Regina's Scott Doucet came close with just 20 seconds left when a bad angle shot beat Red Deer goalie Darcy Kuemper but didn't have enough steam to trickle over the goal-line.

Weal, the league's leading rookie scorer with 11 points, was the only one to score in the shootout portion of the game to give Regina their third straight win.

Damien Ketlo, playing in his first WHL game, earned the win for Regina while playing a solid game and making 28 saves. Making 23 saves at the other end and getting tagged with the loss was Darcy Kuemper.
