Referee Kelly Sutherland leaves with injury @NHL
The Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers played old-time hockey -- one referee and two linesmen -- after referee Kelly Sutherland left Wednesday's game in the first period when he was hit in the face by a deflected shot.

Sutherland was watching the play off to the left of New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist when Sabres defenseman Jordan Leopold ripped a slap shot from the right point. The puck deflected off New York forward Marian Gaborik in front of the net and hit Sutherland 5:37 into the game.

Sutherland never went down, but held his face in pain as play was quickly stopped.

Sutherland was not cut but was treated by a Buffalo trainer before being helped off the ice, appearing woozy as he left. He did not return.
The game resumed with Justin St. Pierre as the lone referee, along with linesmen Steve Miller and Brad Kovalchik.
