The Chirp Katie Guay

Katie Guay is a guest on the latest episode of "The Chirp with Daren Millard" podcast, available now on multiple iOS and Android podcast apps.

Guay became the first woman to officiate an American Hockey League game when Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (Pittsburgh Penguins) defeated Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia Flyers) 2-1 on Oct. 16. She was one of the first four women to officiate in the NHL when she worked an NHL prospect tournament hosted by the Anaheim Ducks from Sept. 7-10, 2019. Guay discusses how she got her start in officiating, her style dealing with players and balancing her 9-to-5 job with game assignments.
"At the end of the day our job is to call a fair, consistent game," Guay said. "The hope is that over the course of 60 minutes we're calling it consistently. I find the biggest compliment after a game is when the coach of the losing team says, great game. That shows a huge amount of respect. For those that generally mean it, I think that's a great nod of confidence that we called the game to the rulebook consistently and fair both ways."
Guay played four seasons at Brown University (2001-05) and was captain as a senior forward. She shares the ins and outs of refereeing and stories including the whereabouts of her first AHL jersey and how working the prospect tournament in Anaheim led to an appearance on her favorite game show.
