Red Wings sign Smith to two-year contract

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today announced that they have re-signed defenseman Brendan Smith to a two-year contract. In accordance with club policy, additional details will not be disclosed.

Smith, 26, has played in a total of 195 games for the Red Wings in the past four seasons, recording 10 goals, 37 assists and 185 penalty minutes. The blueliner has also skated in 24 NHL playoff games for the Red Wings over the past three years, tallying two goals and three assists. Last year, Smith suited up in a career-high 76 games for Detroit and posted 13 points (4-9-13), along with 68 penalty minutes for the second-straight year.
