Jimmy Howard will dress Wednesday as the Detroit Red Wings backup goalie, and should be ready to play Saturday against the Winnipeg Jets, according to the team's Twitter.
The news was announced by coach Mike Babcock, who said Howard, out since sustaining a groin injury Jan. 10 against the Washington Capitals, was excellent during the Red Wings practice Tuesday.
Petr Mrazek will start for Detroit on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins (8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, SN1, TVA Sports), and has played the majority of minutes in Howard's absence. Mrazek has gone 13-4-1 this season with a 2.42 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.
Detroit's backup goaltender entering the season, Jonas Gustavsson, is returning from an injury he sustained in November. The Red Wings will carry three goalies for the time being, according to the Detroit Free Press.
