Red Wings' Howard sits with back spasms @NHLdotcom
DETROIT -- Jimmy Howard went through the morning skate for the Detroit Red Wings and looked fine afterward in the locker room, but back spasms scratched him from the lineup for Thursday night's game against Phoenix.
The Wings put backup Chris Osgood in goal against the Coyotes and called up Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League to back him up. Osgood then allowed three first-period goals.
Howard is day-to-day with the back spasms.
To clear a spot on the roster, the Wing put forward Kris Draper on long-term injured reserve list also placed defenseman Brian Rafalski on the short-term IR. Both Draper (sports hernia) and Rafalski (knee) are recovering from surgeries.
MacDonald, 30, has a 2-1-1 record, 1.72 goals-against average and one shutout in four appearances with Grand Rapids.
