Red Wings' Gustavsson in goal, Alfredsson hopeful

by Staff

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jonas Gustavsson will start for the second consecutive time against the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference First Round series on Saturday at TD Garden (3 p.m. ET; NBC, RDS, TSN).

With starter Jimmy Howard out with the flu, Gustavsson made 37 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss in Game 4 on Thursday. Coach Mike Babcock said Friday Gustavsson would start again.

Boston leads the best-of-7 series 3-1.

"We should be able to go out there and play loose tomorrow with a lot of energy," Gustavsson told the Red Wings website. "The way we started the last game that's the way we need to play."

Forward Daniel Alfredsson skated Friday on a line with Johan Franzen and Darren Helm and said he expects to be back in the lineup after missing Games 3 and 4 with a back injury.

"I felt pretty good skating today," Alfredsson said. "We'll see how it goes here, but I anticipate being available tomorrow."

Babcock said he was hopeful Alfredsson would return for Game 5 but would not make any lineup decisions until Saturday.

"Alfie has great skill and he's a veteran leader. You would like to have him in the lineup, but they can only play if they can go," Babcock said. "These back things, if you can't move, you can’t move. We played him quite a few games when he couldn't move. The reality is we have got a lot on the line. You have got to be able to skate, so we're hopeful he's in the lineup tomorrow."

Forward Henrik Zetterberg returned to the lineup in Game 4 after missing 24 games with a herniated disk in his back sustained during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Detroit's captain practiced Friday before revealing his back felt fine and he expected to play in Game 5.

The Red Wings recalled goalie prospect Jake Paterson from Grand Rapids.
